A couple of years ago I was ridiculed and verbally attacked when I suggested that the British Government was trying to control Muslims to such an extent they wanted a uniform sermon in masjids on Fridays ... vetted and approved in advance.
I was accused of causing mischief and the main accusers came from a bunch of self important, male community leaders who thought they had access and influence with Number 10 because they occasionally had tea with Tony. Although I was barely two years old as a Muslim revert, the attack on me was personal, vicious and most un-chivalrous ... I am still waiting for an apology after reading on the Muslim Council of Britain's website at the time that I was going to burn in the hellfire for 70 years!
Two years on and the MCB's arranged marriage with New Labour is over and it seems Tony is having tea with a totally new group of self important Muslim men who simply do not represent the Ummah in Britain. I still regard myself as being new to Islam and while I am not a scholar and have never professed to be one, I do have a nose for dodgy politicians, sleazy behaviour and devious governments.
So if I can smell something fishy, you can be certain something rotten is in the air. And you'd have to have lost all sense of smell if you didn't get a whiff of codswallop after reading Ruth Kelly's exclusive in a recent edition of the New Statesman. Earlier this month Sheikh Ruth penned an article in the magazine with the heading: 'Time for a British version of Islam'.
So when did Ruth Kelly become a mufti? She must have gone on the same crash course as Imam Tony Blair you know, the very same course that some of Fleet Street’s finest passed with flying colours.
So knowledgeable are they all about Islam and about how we Muslims should conduct ourselves and practice our faith, they issue fatwas on an almost weekly basis. I wonder when we will be told how to pray, where we should pay our Zakat and who to. In her article, Kelly gushed about her latest plans for our Muslim community and enthused about her bid to take control of Britain’s masjids and madrassas.
She even wrote about government cash being offered through tax relief if mosque committees apply for charitable status. Now I really do fear the worst. Call me cynical, but as my Late Great Aunt Lizzie used to say: You get nowt for out!
This is a blatant move to gain complete control of the mosques and eventually the sermons on Fridays, something I warned about two years ago. Seduced by the false light emanating from the gates of power in Whitehall and Downing Street, various Muslim leaders have blindly devoted themselves to appeasing and fawning around government figures at our expense. Of course New Labour has proven itself to be fickle in its relationships and is about as trustworthy as a Trojan horse.
Over the years various groups and individuals have been used, abused, ridiculed and dumped. The MCB was unceremoniously divorced a while back, but they are not the only ones to be dumped. Anyone remember the grand sounding Mosques & Imams National Advisory Body, known as MINAB? They were dumped at the altar!
Other victims of New Labour’s promiscuous behaviour were those various eager beavers hand-picked to join Home Office working parties following the July 7 bombings. Believing they also had access and influence, they enthusiastically churned out a whole array of recommendations for improved community relations, only to be so cruelly ignored, months later. They honeymoon had barely begun. My advice to all these little wannabes, knaves and fools is do not put your faith in anything or anyone but Allah (swt) and stop handing over the freedoms and liberties of Muslim communities.
Now we are faced with being lectured to by Ruth Kelly who says she wants to tackle extremism ... that's a bit rich coming from a member of Opus Dei where many devotees stick spikes in the top of their legs so they are in permanent pain to emulate the suffering of Christ! And there's lots of other examples of extremist and questionable behaviour involved in being a member of that sect of the Roman Catholic Church. She says she wants to introduce 'a British version of Islam'. This is presumably a version of Islam that is diluted beyond recognition. And I have no doubt she will have found some new slaves from our communities who will happily criticise Islamist parties and governance by shari’ah. I call them the Happy Clappies and they are already in evidence.
Some are being flown in by Blair and Kelly from the US, Canada, Yemen and Mauritania to preach a diluted form of our faith.
More alarmingly, some of these sell outs are already in our midst. They are in the media, on platforms, stages and a television near you. On their knees, they are shaking hands and kissing the feet of those who would harm us and our Deen in a pathetic attempt to ingratiate themselves with the Establishment.
If there's a big conference check out the names of the speakers, and if government ministers are in evidence then you have to ask the question: "And just what are you selling?" They will try and push a weak and pacified Islam willing to accept the status quo in which Muslims are oppressed and subjugated.
And from this same stage you will doubtless get star-struck Muslims who stand up and condemn the actions of their brothers and sisters who are courageously resisting occupation and oppression with whatever they have. We are already living in a world where Arab leaders belly-danced shamelessly in front of America while handing Iraq over on a plate. The same Arab leaders look the other way as beautiful Palestine is continually raped and that other great daughter of the Arab world, Lebanon; where was the Arab world when she was so brutally assaulted?
Sisters are having their hijabs ripped off their heads in Tunisia, fighting for the right to wear scarves on television in Egypt and demanding the right to cover their heads in Turkey.
Well Kelly and Co may have their sell outs, scrambling over each other like frogs in a bucket to get recognition and government money but they all seem to have over-looked one thing ... the more we ordinary Muslims are squeezed the more we will fight back. That is the nature of Islam.
I'm not sure how many more so-called community leaders are willing to castrate themselves in a pathetic attempt to win government approval, but there is a long line of them. However, our youth are now realising that no matter how hard they compromise their deen to blend in with the wider society, when things go sour, they will be treated with suspicion. The more we are told to forget shari’ah, khilafah and jihad, the more Muslims will stand firm to uphold these values.
And while the actions of real jihadists pose absolutely no threat to the West or Western lifestyles let us remember that their resistance is not only justified but embraced and encouraged by international law. The real religious extremists who pose the greatest threat to radicalizing our youth are Christian fundamentalists like Ruth Kelly.
Her article, her actions and the sell outs who will try and deliver a weak and pacified Islam to this government will fail, for the simple reason that more and more young Muslims are realising that it is not terrorism or extremism that is being targeted but Islam itself. And in a way, Kelly's article smacked of deja vu ... consider the behaviour of colonialist leaders during the days of the British Empire ... remember that the Ahmadiyyah Movement was created to try to pacify Muslim opposition?
The Prime Minister and his advisers are still dithering over definitions over what constitutes Britishness. My advice to him and the rest of those hypocrites in the British Government is stop meddling with our faith. And my advice to those Muslims who are abusing their positions of power and influence is simple. "Get up off your knees now and show some respect for your faith and your brothers and sisters. We will not be silenced."
I will agree with Ruth Kelly on one point - things do have to change, that's for sure. But it is not a new form of Islam we need in the UK ... just a new government.
