Only a 'grave threat' would trigger 42-day detention, say ministers

Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights stipulates the right to a Fair Trial. It is resolutely impossible to conceive of a trial being fair when the lawyer, let alone the client, is subject to sustained abuse and harassment at the hands of the establishment.

 As the security check line began moving slowly at Washington Dulles airport, one passenger standing a few steps ahead of me appeared particularly uneasy. His dark skin, long beard, trimmed moustache, prayer spot centred on his forehead, and overall demeanour quickly gave away his identity, though he had obviously labored little to hide it. He was a Muslim and a religious one at that. Predictably, a few minutes later he was singled out and his clothes spread across a separate station reserved for those "randomly" selected for extra security check.

Since the intensification of the Darfur crisis in 2003, Muslims in the West have been accused of turning a blind eye to the estimated 400,000 people killed directly or indirectly by the actions of Sudanese Government and its sponsored militia – the Janjaweed. I felt this most vehemently as I toured universities lecturing on the situation faced by Palestinians.
