We must be united to defeat terrorism

I noted with particular interest the front page coverage on the 9th July. The sentiments of anger of local Muslims at the few misguided individuals responsible for terrorist attacks, in my view are right and justified. In the same edition, there was a piece that dealt with the multi faith, multi-cultural football match. I believe that this was a fitting tribute to the victims of the 7th July bombing in London.

If I may be a little boastful, this is what Leicester does best, to recover from setbacks and mend the fractures of our common humanity. Al ...

Are symbols of faith really a threat to society?

Secularism argues that all people of faith should have the freedom to practice their religion as they see fit in private but that should not impede or infiltrate public life. A denial of the right to freely practice religion not only constitutes a violation of freedom, but it defies the very concept of secularism.

Suleman has lived in Leicester for over thirty years. His experience in business and management sector knowledge has skilled him and widen his networking capabilities on community affairs. He was awarded the MBE by her Majesty in 2002 in recognition for his long years of involvement with local community work related to regional and national issues. He was the founder member of the Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire (MBCOL) and is the Public Relations Officer of the umbrella group the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO), he holds a number of positions in other community groups. His links with Leicester Council of Faiths, Faith Leaders Forum and many other Dialogue groups involving Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Jews have made him versatile in his approach to faith, regeneration, community diplomacy and a much needed advocacy role. He has been engaged with the Home Office and the Constabulary for several years undertaking various activities including giving advice to the senior officers.

Suleman received the National Police Association Award in 2005; he has also served as a Magistrate on the Leicester Bench. Suleman is also an advocate for the human rights this has resulted in him travelling widely to promote the importance of this. He has worked closely with the EU and the Foreign Office. His long years of association in broad based alliances across the region with numerable agencies, organisations, City Council, Health care, Police, Chaplaincies, Law & Order sectors, has made him a person of many talents and skills. His wealth of Leicester based experiences are now focussed through the work of St. Philip’s centre and he acts as one of its key consultants. Suleman also gives regular interviews on community issues both on TV, Radio and the Press. He currently writes as a “first person” columnist for the Leicester Mercury.  Suleman is the consummate volunteer, completely dedicated to the betterment of all, which is demonstrated through his work with many organisations. He is involved with many volunteer organisations and works with some of the local authorities.
